Why should I finish my prescribed antibiotics?
If you're too lazy to finish taking your prescribed antibiotics, you're not alone. Unfortunately, taking all prescribed antibiotics is a must for you.
The development of antibiotics is one of the great discoveries in modern medicine. They fight bacteria and can cure life-threatening infectious diseases such as pneumonia, for which there was previously no effective treatment. But inappropriate use of antibiotics means more and more bacteria are becoming resistant to these types of drugs.
If bacteria become resistant, the bacteria have acquired new properties that protect them from antibiotics. Some types of bacteria can produce substances that make certain antibiotics ineffective, for example. Bacteria that can protect themselves from several different antibiotics are referred to as "multiresistant".
Antibiotics have several levels of dosage, starting from the lowest to the highest. If the bacteria have refused the lowest dose, you will need to move on to the next dose. If your body is already in the highest dose, then antibiotics will be of no use at all.
So are you still going to stop antibiotics in the middle?
